This year, an exciting new addition to the event was made; a WTA 125 tournament will now take place alongside the men’s competition. San Luis Potosi Open Tennis Tournament
The San Luis Potosi Open is an annual outdoor clay court tournament set in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. As a Tour-sanctioned event, the tournament is part of the ATP Challenger Tour and a new addition to the WTA 125 series of tournaments, formerly known as WTA 125k. This year will mark the inaugural edition of the women’s competition and the 35th edition of ATP. The tournament is part of the opening swing of tournaments in Mexico and its venue is the Club Deportivo Potosino. It is also one of the few Tour events played on clay courts, which in this case is on red clay. The main sponsor for the event is the San Luis Potosi state government.

San Luis Potosi Open History and Winners
History
As mentioned prior, the San Luis Potosi is the second oldest remaining Challenger event of the ATP Tour. The tournament held its inaugural edition in 1980. Another edition was held the following year, after which the event was discontinued for 2 years. Since 1984 however, it has acquired a permanent spot on the Tour. The tournament was one of many affected by the Covid-19 pandemic which lead to 2 consecutive cancellations in 2020 and 2021.
Throughout the tournament’s history, many great foreigners and players from Mexico, and all across Latin America have contested at the Challenger event. This list includes Guillermo Coria, Guillermo Vilas, Juan Marin del Potro, and Marcelo Rios. Since this is the first edition of the tournament as a WTA 125 event, there are no previous winners or female players.

The total prize money for the first women’s competition at the San Luis Potosi Open is set at $115,000, a standard amount for WTA 125 events. As no official prize money breakdown was provided by event officials, we will be looking at the prize money breakdown of Copa Oster which had an identical prize money pool. Tickets for the event are available online from TicektOne. There are no day/night sessions and single tickets are not available for purchase. Only multi-combo deals/ packages are available. These packages come in 2 types: a weekend combo and a full tournament package. The weekend combo applies for the weekend on the 1st and 2nd of April, which is the final stretch of the event while the full tournament package offers coverage for the whole tournament’s duration. Both types have further options based on seating with VIP options as well.
