Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open History and Previous Winners
History
The Abu Dhabi Open which is now an annual event was a supplementary event held in 2021. Due to the suspension of all tour events in China and the delay in the Australian competitions, a WTA 500 event was played in Abu Dhabi. No tournament was held in 2022 as for the most part, the tour had returned to its regular scheduling.
The reasoning behind the formation of this newly sanctioned event is possibly St. Petersburg Ladies’ Trophy being canceled in retaliation to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or because Abu Dhabi was the only main city left in the Middle East to not hold a tennis competition as there is already an event in Dubai and one in Qatar as well.
