In the opening round of the 2023 Cincinnati WTA tournament, Venus Williams, 43, conquered Veronika Kudermetova, the world’s 16th seed, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. This win marked her first victory over a top-20 player in four years.
“I focused on winning individual points, not the match as a whole. This perspective helped me overcome challenges,” explained the former world number one.
With a 3-5 record in 2023, Venus Williams entered the Cincinnati draw as the 533rd-ranked player. Despite trailing 4-1 in both sets, she rallied by converting six of nine break points.
