Canada Open History and Winners
The Women’s Canada Open competition was first held in 1892. It is the second oldest active tournament after Wimbledon and was held one month before the inaugural U.S. National Championships. The first WTA Canadian Open was played in 1892 at Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, Canada. Since its start, WTA Canadian Open has had different names due to sponsors like Canadian Championships (1892-1967), Canadian Open (1968-1996), Du Maurier Open (1997-2000), Rogers AT&T Cup (2001-2004), Rogers Cup (2005-2019) and now National Bank Open (2021- present).
WTA Canadian Open is the oldest women’s tennis tournament in the world, only the Wimbledon Open has been longer than it. Before 2011, ATP and WTA were held on 2 different weeks in the same venue but after that, both events were held on the same week but in different venues- Toronto and Montreal.
Both Events switch their venues from year to year. Since 2021 rules have changed, now in even number years ATP is held in Montreal and WTA in Toronto, and vice versa in odd number years.
