Pan Pacific Open History and Winners
The Pacific Open tournament has had a long history on the WTA tour, being first established in 1976. In the 38 years since its conception, the tournament has had 36 editions. Everything from the name, tour level, location, and even court surface has been subject to change over the years.
When it was first played in 1976, the tournament went by the name The Sillook Open and was held in Tokyo, Japan. The name would be changed thrice, once in 1982 to the TV Tennis Open, again in 1983 being renamed to Queens Grand Prix, and finally in 1984 when the tournament was re-established with its current name. The championship has been primarily held at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium (1984–2007) and Ariake Colosseum (2008-2017, 2022,2023).
From 1983 to 2008, the tournament was classified as a Tier 1 tournament. Then in 2009, the tournament would become a Premier 5 event before being relegated to a Premier event in 2014. The category was once again changed in recent times when its Premier level was discontinued. From 2020 onwards, the championship is a WTA 500 event.
