History
Established in 1997, the Corel WTA Tour introduced the Gold Coast Classic in Queensland, a Tier III outdoor hardcourt event, joining the pre-Australian Open lineup. Noteworthy players like Ai Sugiyama and Venus Williams shone in their early editions, as the tournament underwent name changes, from Thalgo Australian Women’s Hardcourts to Uncle Tobys Hardcourts and later Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts.
Simultaneously, the ATP International Series Australian Hard Court Championships in Adelaide evolved into the Next Generation Adelaide International by 2006. In response to calendar changes in 2008-2009, the Next Generation Adelaide International merged with the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts, forming the joint ATP-WTA Brisbane International, providing a crucial lead-up to the Australian Open.
Commencing in January 2009 at the Tennyson Tennis Centre, the Brisbane International earned WTA premier status by 2012. After 2019, the ATP discontinued its association due to the ATP Cup, while the WTA-sanctioned event continued. Paused from 2021-2023 due to Covid-19, the Brisbane International returns in 2024 with expanded draws: a 48-player WTA singles draw, a 32-player ATP singles draw, and 24 pairs in both men’s and women’s doubles.
