San Diego Open Tennis Tournament
The San Diego Open is a professional outdoor hard-court tennis tournament. The championship is part of the ATP and WTA Tour, being of the ATP250 and WTA500 categories respectively. The tournament saw a revival after many other tennis tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year marks the 2nd men’s event and 1st women’s event since 2015.

San Diego Open History
The San Diego Open was originally the South Carolina Open, an exclusively WTA tennis tournament. The South Carolina Open originated from the year 1887 and ran till 1978. Throughout the years the tournament has had many names, venues and title sponsors, even being held once in Tokyo. Its most recent edition, in 2015, the tournament was called the Carlsbad Classic, a WTA challenger championship. In 2021, the tournament returned, holding its first ever ATP250 event. After the revival garnered much success and support, it was announced that WTA would finally return to San Diego.
San Diego Open 2022 Champions
In singles championship, Polish star and world no 1 Iga Swiatek wins final battle against Donna Vekic of Croatia. Iga grabs victory in final set (6-3, 3-6, 6-0). Iga wins 8th title of the WTA 2022 season.

In doubles championship, American pair Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula defeated Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Giuliana Olmos of Mexico. American pair win match in tie breaker (1-6, 7-5, 10-4).

Since the WTA tournament is a relatively new event, there are not any previous editions we can compare with to gauge how the prize money will be distributed. Instead we will be looking at other WTA500 tournaments and how a $757,900 prize fund is standardly split.
