Throughout the years the tournament has had many names, venues, and title sponsors, even being held once in Tokyo. In its most recent edition, in 2015, the tournament was called the Carlsbad Classic, a WTA challenger championship. In 2021, the tournament returned, holding its first-ever ATP250 event.
