Madrid Open, also known as Mutua Madrid Open due to sponsorship by Mutua Madrileña, is held in Madrid in early May. Madrid Masters played on the outdoor red Clay surface of Caja Magica, Spain Madrid since 2009. Madrid Open was founded in 2002 but till 2009 it was the only ATP tour since 2009 both the ATP tour and WTA tour were held in Spain. In 2012, the event was played on the blue court for the visual experiments but it wasn’t continued after some top players refused to play on it, and the tournament returned to the traditional red clay.
20th WTA 1000 Madrid Open will start on 28th April and ends on the 7th of May 2022 including qualifying matches. In the 2022 edition, the draw will be like 64 singles and 32 Doubles. The venue of the Madrid Open will be Park Manzanares of Madrid, Spain. The winner will get 1000 rating points with the runner-up’s 650 points. This event is classified as an ATP Tour Masters 1000 on the ATP Tour and a WTA 1000 event on the WTA Tour

Madrid Open 2021 Champions
In 2021, the Singles champion was Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. Aryana won the final against Aussie star Ashleigh Barty by 6-0, 3-6, and 6-4. On the other side, in doubles, Croatian pair Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova won the doubles champion crown against Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Demi Schuurs of Nederland.
Spanish player Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic has a record of 3 times Singles champion. In doubles, only Italian pair Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci wins the doubles championship twice (2012, 2014). Serena Williams of the USA is the only player to win on 2 different surfaces of the Mutua Madrid Open (red clay 2013, blue clay 2012).

In 2022, Madrid Open prize money is $6,575,560. While in 2021 prize money was low due to Covid which was $2,614,465 where the singles winner got $390,798 and runner up got $233,467. Contrary to this, in doubles winner received $77,822 and the runner-up received $54,486. While from 2016 to 2019 total prize money was €6,536,160.
