Merida Open History and Previous Winners
Merida Open History
For the first time ever, the city of Merida will be hosting a WTA 250 event. As mentioned earlier, the Merida Open is a replacement for the now-defunct Abierto Zapopan. The tournament was based in Zapopan, Mexico, and upon its cancellation, a vacuum was created in Mexico for a new WTA 250 event.
Akron, the title sponsor for both tournaments has sponsored multiple other tennis events as well, most notably the Guadalajara Open Akron which is another Mexican tennis event of the WTA 500 category.
The Merida Open’s predecessor, the Abierto Zapopan, was a short-lived event that only had 3 editions. The 2022 champion Sloane Stephens will be participating in the inaugural edition of the Merida Open.
